September 1986. Just reached the Cave near Khatling Glacier in the Himalayas. It was 5 P.M. sun set time. Brilliant lights. Biting cold .Altitude almost 11000 ft, Sipping very hot coffee. In front of us was Rudgaira peak. Dazzling lights of all possible color playing on the white canvas of the surrounding majestic peaks of the great Himalayas. The beauty we saw was so stunning that we six buddies could not speak for straight 15 minutes. "Ah","Oho","what a beauty" seemed very much inappropriate for the painting that was so effortlessly carrying out by an great unseen artist. In between us and the great snow wall of the peak there was a river named Vilangana. She also contributed generously in this wonderful painting but remained a bit indifferent. After sometime I felt hungry. After a long & hard 5 hrs. trek it was natural. I stood up & went to the cave which is our night shelter also. I found there our guide cum porter cum cook doing something in squatting position. I tried to draw his attention to the out side scenery but he didn't care. I bent a little & pipped over his shoulder. I saw he was trying to solve some mathematical problems in a note pad. I asked "what are you doing man?" He sheepishly replied "exams of my little son is very near sir,he is very poor in maths so I am solving some of the math problems given to him as a homework. Meal will be ready by half an hour sir, sorry for the delay sir". I came out of the cave, lights are more brilliant now & a great feeling of joy engulfed me!! Even after so many days this memory still act as a mood raiser in my deep sorrow, thanks Himalayas, the greatest of all greats.
